Fantastic article Alex. I’ve been a DM for 5ed for about 5 years now. I solo play other game systems. My first DND game was the Phandelver starter set, 1st edition. I had never played DnD let alone being the DM! But no one else wanted to do it. I found that I loved it but was so new that if my PCs went a different path, I panicked because I had nothing prepared. I wanted the game to be perfect. My daughters still tease me about railroading them, to which I remind them that was my first time and I’m much better now. Brats! lol. I still have a hard time though with the Rule of Cool vs the basic rules. If you have more advice on the Rule of Cool, I’d like to hear it! 😊😊😊
Thanks Robin! That's great that you jumped into the seat, I know how daunting it can seem and 5E asks alot of the DM so kudos! I love to discuss, learn, and compare notes on these topics so I'll be sure to keep em coming. I am jealous you run for your daughters I am gearing up to run for my kids and it feels existential and that I may perish if they do not enjoy it.
Oops I hit submit before I finished my thought! Lol 😆 my other daughter doesn’t really have time to play. I’m Dming for my sister in law and a niece and nephew. The kids are really awkward teens and for the life of me I cannot get them to interact a lot. Yet they insist on playing. When I ask them, what do you want to do, or what does your character want to do, all I get is I don’t know. The boy loves the battles so he does better at that but still keeps it bland, like “I hit the Goblin with my sword”. He won’t describe his swing, or the result of his swing…it gets frustrating sometimes. There are a lot of long pauses!!! lol 😂 I’ll wait for them, try to coax/coach them, then I end up taking over with a description. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
I think theres alot to explore regarding building players skill through play here. Its not easy leading players to see the full breadth of gameplay at their finger tips!
Going after one the most popular heuristics! Hell yeah

Thanks! As it turns out, my one daughter hated roleplaying and won’t play. My other daughter is fantastic with it
